Top of page I went to my first counselling appointment yesterday and was scared and nervous because I didn't know what to expect. Let me tell you if yesterday is an indication of the progress that I can make within myself than I am in the right place. Clancy rocks!!! Top of page Family counselling saved my marriage and my family. We have learned how to be able to communicate with each other and feel safe doing it. It is the best thing we have ever done. - Tracy M. Top of page For me the Family Program helped me understand the disease and cycle of Alcoholism and Addiction. It also taught me how to set up health boundaries for myself and that I am not able to help the addict but that the addict has to want to help themselves. - Tracy M. Top of page I attended the Family Program and found it to be very informative and worthwhile. Everyone was very friendly and supportive. Their stories were very inspiring. After attending these meetings, I realized some of the mistakes that I had made as well it helped me to realize that I had to let go. Top of page Upon completion of the SAFE course, I had been given the tools and understanding to adjust and deal with all the affects that addiction has had on my family environment. - Rhonda I. Top of page Things started hitting me once my brother went into InnerVisions. He asked me to take the Family Program as I felt like I was falling apart and he knew I needed support. The Family Program allowed me to look at the part I played and lead to me going through the counselling program. I quickly learned I didn't want to look at myself and would rather focus on what was going on with others in my life. I also learned to stop pointing the finger and look within myself and what I needed to change. I was living in chaos and wasn't coping with day to day life. It was the first time in my life I trusted someone enough to truly look inside myself and share what was going on. I realized I was not helping those around me and was sacrificing everything I wanted in life. The environment was safe and supportive and I continue to get the support I need, even when I think I don't need it. I found my inner peace and am more effectively supporting myself and those I care about around me. I was not given answers, I was given tools that I am using daily in my life and I am ever grateful for that. - Sarah J. Top of page I came into the Family Program looking for answers to my questions, and left questioning the answers I had already implemented in my life. At the Family Program I was taught to look at old obstacles in different ways. I was taught I was not alone in the way that I felt and it didn't matter where any of us came from - old, rich, young, poor, black, white, green - our loved ones were all suffering from addiction and in turn so where we. I was taught and I was supported, not only though the other members of the group, but by the facilitators as well. I learned what it would take for my loved one to succeed in recovery and what it would take for me to succeed if he did not. At the end of the day I learned some very valuable lessons that I will add to my tool box to fight this horrible disease called addiction. Many thanks, and best wishes to those to come. - Natasha B. Top of page The Family Program has given me an understanding of the powerful hold drugs (including alcohol), has over the addicted person. The addict is not using by choice as I used to think, but has absolutely no power over their addiction until they are able to find the help they so desperately need. I was truly inspired to see Frank and Steve, (both recovering addicts) facilitating the Family Program. Their genuine caring, compassion, understanding, confidence and humour helped all who attended this informative and productive program. I was able to see what it is like for an addict from their perspective as they were able to understand what is like from the addicts' family perspective. Now I have the education needed to understand the cycle of addiction and how to cope if my loved one should relapse. We are forever grateful for the Family Program and the people who make it all possible. - Heather B. Top of page We were shocked and confused to discover our grandson had a drug problem. Participating in the Family Program gave us the opportunity to share our feelings with other families in the same position – and offered us an insight into the problems of addiction. Sharing with the other families made us realize that we were not so alone in dealing with devastation and hopelessness. Take the program it is well worth your time, you will be thankful at the end. - Crystal J Top of page I have begun to examine my expectations not only of my son, but also more importantly of myself. - Alastair S Top of page The SAFE program helps you appreciate the amount of work your loved one has dedicated to their initial recovery process, which in turn helps your to overcome your hurt, disappointment and resentments that you have felt over the years of dealing with their addiction. It also slaps you in the face with the truth about yourself! We spend so much time focusing on the addict and why they are the way they are, we often forget to look in the mirror. The SAFE program helps you come to terms with your powerlessness over someone else’s addiction and you learn not to feel guilty for being selfish and taking back your power. - Coreena R Top of page Enjoyed the program immensely, found it very educational and rewarding. Top of page I think everyone who has a family member (affected by drugs or alcohol) should try to attend. Talking with recovered addicts (SAFE Program Facilitators), who know what has happened, what is happening and might happen in the future is very helpful. Also, to be in a room with other people whose live have been hurt by addiction is a positive experience. Everyone is hurt, angry, afraid and hopeful – and once you realize that, you can cope better yourself. - Margaret E. You will be thankful at the end. - Crystal J Top of page We are asked to give some comments on the six-week “Substance Abuse Family Education” program that we have attended this May/June at Tri City Education in Maple Ridge. My wife and I are grandparents of a 26-year-old male that is wasting his life away on drugs. He has been staying in our home for some time and we have tried different ways to convince him to seek better help then we can give him. One of the reasons for taking and following the program is on the recommendation of Frank Veeken after speaking to him at the Prairie House in Coquitlam. Among other things we have taken away with us from the program is that we have to stop what we are doing and let him find his own way. At the moment we are simply making it easy by supplying him with food and shelter. The "Life Cycle of an Addict/Alcoholic" is precisely in the right place. We have experienced it so many times but having stated it like this in print is a very big help for us. Billy’s videos are excellent and we believe should be shown on local or for that matter on any public television. Our presenter was Frank Veeken, and we would like to say thank you very much, it is greatly appreciated the way the program was done. We hope that this program can continue so that more people that need help and understanding will receive the benefit from all this information the same as we did. It was told from their point of view; looking from the inside out. I now know how the addicts mind works. The information taught by the instructors is an eye opening experience to anyone who has a loved one suffering from addiction. I learned more about myself and where I am accountable as well as letting go of some of the resentment and blame I placed on my loved one. I must tell you that after attending the SAFE Program, you cannot afford not to attend. But after my first meeting, I was so impressed at the way it was talked about, I couldn’t wait to return the following week.
